The Context — The History
Nehemiah rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls under Persian rule while facing opposition from surrounding officials. The people had gathered at the Water Gate to hear Ezra read the Law—a public renewal of covenant life.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
When the people wept hearing the Law, Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Levites urged celebration instead of mourning. The Feast of Booths context frames holiness as joyful sharing with those who lack.
