The Context — The History
Psalm 4 is a Davidic evening prayer amid distress, likely composed when enemies spread falsehood and social pressure threatened peace. Ancient Israel often ended day with trust in God’s protection rather than anxiety over opponents or circumstances.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
David calls the Lord to relieve and answer him. He warns against sin and urges trust. Many ask who will bring prosperity, but David declares the Lord gives greater joy than abundance. He lies down in peace because God alone makes him dwell in safety.
