The Context — The History
Joel prophesied to Judah, likely during a devastating locust plague that stripped the land bare. He called the nation to fasting and repentance, seeing the disaster as a wake-up call to return to God.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Joel summoned elders and all inhabitants to lament. He called for a sacred assembly and described rending hearts rather than merely tearing garments — outward ritual without inward change.
